Preface and paratexts

CONDITIONS OF SALE. 1st. That the Person who bids most is the Buyer, but if any Dispute arises, the Lot or Lots be put up to Sale again. / 2d. That no Person advances less than Six-Pence, under Five Shillings; above One Pound, One Shilling ; above Five Pounds, Two Shillings and Six-Pence; and so on in Proportion. / 3d. That each Person give in his Name, and pay Five Shillings in the Pound (if demanded) for what he buys; and that no Lot be delivered in Time of Selling, unless first paid for. / 4th. The Lots must be taken away at the Buyer’s Ex-pence, and the Money paid at the Place of Sale, within Two Days after the Sale is ended. / Any Gentleman who cannot attend the Sale, may have their Commissions executed / By their most humble Servants, / LEIGH AND SOTHEBY.

Notes

ondb: In the months after Thomas Sandby's death there are several entries in Joseph Farington's Diary referring to the possible purchase of the one hundred drawings that he had made to illustrate his lectures as professor of architecture, for which the president, Benjamin West, thought that not more than £200 should be paid, though initially 300 guineas was mentioned. This sale did not take place and many of these sheets were included in the auction of Sandby's library and drawings at Messrs Leigh and Sothebys in July 1799, which realized £570.
