Notes

Copy with ms. prices, by John Putland, in Victoria and Albert Library (London) - might be incomplete, with only 450 titles.

Harold Herbert Williams has argued in Dean Swift's Library (1932), that books in the first 16 pages belonged to Swift's library (lot 657), and that the last part of the catalogue had nothing to do with Swift. The seller, Faulkner, notes that "The Books mark'd thus * have Remarks or Observations on them in the Hand of Dr. Swift". These are indeed only to be found before p. 16. Acccording to Williams, the second part of the catalogue belonged to a Dr. Wilson, who had stolen several of Swift's books. Williams decided to print an uncomplete facsimile (up to lot 657) of the catalogue.

The theory is often accepted (see also Dirk F. Paßmann (Author) Heinz J. Vienken (Author), The Library and Reading of Jonathan Swift (Peter Lang): "Fortunately, there is the auction catalogue, printed in 1746, so we know most of the books Swift owned at the time of his death. The catalogue lists a total of 657 lots. Earlier in his life, Swift had formed a habit of drawing up lists of the books he had read or owned. The first extant, of his reading, dates from 1697/1698, when he was employed by his mentor Sir William Temple. Another inventory of books he owned, Swift compiled in 1715."

However, Williams argument is not fully convincing, when this catalogue is compared to other catalogues printed in the same period. He mentions "a blank space to the foot of the page [16]". While there is a blank space, there is at the bottom of the page a recall to the next page (folio). The classification by format and the numbering are continuous throughout the volume. Absent is the division is Days, but the "time and place for the Sale" had not yet been decided when printing the catalogue.
